Drive-In Cinemas in Thailand

Thailand does not have a historical drive-in cinema tradition in the style of the United States, Australia, or Japan. The country’s first documented drive-in movie screening took place in Bangkok on July 2, 2020, organized as a pandemic-era event. Thailand’s tropical climate — with high temperatures and humidity year-round — has been the primary barrier to the format’s adoption. Outdoor cinema in Thailand exists primarily as open-air rooftop and lawn events rather than car-based drive-ins.

Bangkok’s First Drive-In (2020)

Bangkok’s inaugural drive-in movie screening on July 2, 2020, drew approximately 80 vehicles to an outdoor parking venue. The film shown was Trolls World Tour. The event ran for four days as an alternative entertainment option during COVID-19 restrictions on indoor cinemas.

Organizers addressed Thailand’s tropical heat with an innovative cooling system. Plastic pipes laid across the parking lot connected to flexible tubes that channeled cool air into vehicles through window gaps. Evening temperatures at the event measured 28°C (82°F) with 78 percent humidity — conditions that would make sitting in a closed car without cooling impractical.

Tickets cost 1,200 baht (approximately $39 USD) per vehicle, including popcorn and soft drinks. Reuters reported the event as Bangkok’s “first drive-in movie theatre.”

Climate Challenges

Thailand’s tropical climate creates specific obstacles for the drive-in format. Daytime and evening temperatures remain warm throughout the year, typically 27°C to 33°C. Humidity levels are consistently high. Sitting inside a parked car without air conditioning becomes uncomfortable quickly.

Running a vehicle’s engine for air conditioning during a screening raises noise, exhaust, and fuel consumption concerns. The cooling system developed for the 2020 Bangkok event represents one attempt to solve this problem, but the infrastructure adds cost and complexity.

The monsoon season, roughly May through October, brings frequent heavy rainfall. Sudden downpours can disrupt outdoor events with little warning.

Outdoor Cinema Culture

While car-based drive-ins have not taken hold, Thailand has an active outdoor cinema scene using different formats. Skyline Film Bangkok, operating since 2016, runs outdoor movie nights at rooftop venues across the city. Locations include the River City Bangkok rooftop overlooking the Chao Phraya River and other hotel and commercial rooftop spaces. Screenings use inflatable screens and wireless headphones.

Bangkok Open-Air Cinema returned in early 2026, running weekend screenings at cultural venues including the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. These events use outdoor lawn seating rather than vehicles.

These open-air formats suit the Thai climate better than enclosed-car viewing. Rooftop venues catch evening breezes, and lawn seating allows attendees to spread out. Both formats have found consistent audiences in Bangkok.

Visiting Information

Drive-in cinema events in Thailand are occasional rather than regular. They appear primarily as special event screenings, corporate promotions, or pop-up experiences rather than ongoing operations. Checking Thai event platforms and social media for current listings is the most reliable way to find upcoming screenings.

Searching for drive-in cinema (ไดรฟ์อินเธียเตอร์) or outdoor cinema (โรงหนังกลางแจ้ง) on Thai event sites returns relevant results. Skyline Film Bangkok and Bangkok Open-Air Cinema maintain active social media accounts with screening schedules.

For outdoor cinema events in Bangkok, visiting during the dry season (November through April) reduces the likelihood of rain disruptions. Evening temperatures remain warm year-round.
